মৃত্যুর পরেও যেসব ব্যক্তি তাদের কর্ম দিয়ে ইতিহাসে অমর হয়ে আছেন মহাত্মা গান্ধী তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম। তিনি অহিংসা ও অসাম্প্রদায়িক চেতনার শক্তি দিয়ে অধিকার আদায়ের স্বপ্ন দেখতেন এবং সর্বদা নিপীড়িত নির্যাতিত মানুষের পক্ষে দাবী আদায়ে সোচ্চার ছিলেন। ভারতীয়দের মধ্যে ভারতীয় জাতীয়তাবাদী চেতনা গড়ে তোলার জন্য স্বদেশী আন্দোলন গড়ে তোলেন যা পরবর্তীতে ভারতীয় জাতীয়তাবাদের বিকাশে এবং ইংরেজদের বিপক্ষে দাঁড়িয়ে নিজেদের অধিকার আদায়ে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হতে সাহায্য করে। মহাত্মা গান্ধীই ভারতীয়দের স্বাধীনতা লাভের স্বপ্ন দেখায় যা ১৯৪৭ সালে ভারত স্বাধীনতা আইন পাশের মাধ্যমে বাস্তব রূপ লাভ করে। তাই বলা যায় যে ভারতীয় ইতিহাসে যেসকল সূর্যসন্তান জন্মগ্রহণ করেন মহাত্মা গান্ধীর অবস্থান তাদের মধ্যে সর্বাগ্রে। তাই মহাত্মা গান্ধীকে ভারতীয় জাতীর পিতা হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়। ২০০৭ সালের ১৫ই জুন জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ সভায় ২রা অক্টোবর-কে আন্তর্জাতিক অহিংস দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়। জাতিসংঘের সকল সদস্য দেশ এ দিবস পালনে সম্মতি জ্ঞাপন করে।
